On the Island Again

Once we arrived home from New Brunswick and settled in it was on to Vancouver Island caching again. Did a day of caching with Cougar Kid on the off road motorcycles up and around Mount Washington for a day, the weather was much better and the views were great this time up. Did a day trip up to the Carmanah Valley to do and old rail bed with 4 old train trestles from the very early 1900's. They removed the steel from the trestles so you have to hike up and down the valleys of sort. Most of them are in place so it is great for pictures but not walking on. I would recommend this area for anyone to see it's greatness and history as well. JuRuu and LifeAboveAll were with me on this trip.
Had my OAP-65 event on the 23 of August and about 80 cachers and friends attended in Ladysmith at Aggie Hall/Fields. We all had fun and a lot of good gag gifts. A great way to spend ones milestone birthday.
Our Sunday Caching Group has been doing some great hikes and day trips. On the 31st of August, we headed for Saturna Island. This was a long day trip, up at 0200 hours, picked up by JuRuu at 0300 hours, then we picked up Classictwo at 0315 hours and then off we went to pick up Sheesh695 about 0300 hours. I was already tired but we pushed on to the ferry terminal at Schwartz Ferry and arrived there at 0500 hours. Once on the ferry, we planned our course of action and away we went, we hiked for two hours across the ridge, then came back to the terminal area form a few caches and picked up Diraduck at 1005 hours, she sleeps in. We spent the day caching the whole Island, hiking, driving finding every cache on the Island, 67 in total. It was a grand day and I think the views were some of the most spectacular I have ever seen, this is a place cachers and non cachers should go for a day trip. We caught the 2135 hours ferry home and arrived back home at 0130 on Monday, a long great day.
Trying to reach 16,000 before December 31, 2014, but may be a little hard as the weather changes.
May be going to Mount Arrowsmith this coming Sunday and will post if we do go there..
Happy Caching and happy trails..

The New Brunswick End!

As I sit in the Montreal Airport, I thought I would end this chapter of my visit to NB. I managed to get about 150 caches, mostly in the morning early, but Princess! and I did go to Quebec for a day, Amqui, a small town about 90 KM's away from Campbellton New Brunswick. It was a beautiful drive along a river all the way. managed to get a few caches and a letterbox for my 7 days of August. My sister, Indynb and I went to Bathurst for a day of caching. We started out on HWY 11 doing a power trail, NOT, this is considered a HWY power trail, all caches were about 30 to 60 meters through wet road side swamp and thick bush. We did this for about 4 hours and then back to Bathurst for some urban caching. A lot of these were a little tough but better than the power trail. Most cachers do not give hints or put clues on the cache page.
But over all it was a good time and look forward to my next trip here.
On the way to the airport this morning we had a few hours to kill so we grabbed 9 caches in the Bathurst area and near the airport.
Happy Geocaching . Geocaching My Way of Life Paulboy

Day Five in New Brunswick

Things are moving along great with the caching in the early morning. Doing a lot of headlamp caching until the sun comes up. We had our event last night and most of the people that showed up were french which was different from our events on the west coast. But most of them speak English as well. Half of them were from the Quebec side of the river. Lots of fun as usual. As I have five of the August souvenirs and no letterbox for 200 KM's around, I thought I would have to wait to get back to BC to finish but one of the cachers from Amqui, Quebec, about 80 KM's away has has a letter box there so Princess and I are heading there about 0900 hours this morning for the cache and a little site seeing as well. As I did a PQ it is apparent that all the caches are in french but I am able to translate most of what I need. Although I was brought up here, it is an area I have not visited yet, so should be fun. I never did check that area for a letter box, so the event paid off. I will do a new log later to let you know how it went..Happy caching .

Caching In New Brunswick

Arrived after a long flight and on the way home, I just had to grab one not to far from the Airport. I have been caching early in the morning in Campbellton and area, mostly my sister's (Indynb), caches. I usually leave about 0500 hours and cache in the dark for a while with a head lamp until the light breaks. It sure is different here, mostly no clues but they are almost all hanging, winter friendly they call it. If you ask any other cacher, even my sister for a clue, you would think you asked then for a $1000.00.
Did some caching in Quebec this morning and the same goes for their caches except a lot of them are in french but some of them are french as well as English. The fir trees rip your hands and arms apart and I have a few scrapes on my head as well.
All together having fun visiting with the parents and the early caching is a blast. On Thursday, Indynb and I are going down towards Bathurst for a day of caching but for some reason, I think it will not be as long as I hope it is, but it will be good to cache with my little sister.
I have managed to find about 75 caches so far and have three souvenirs for the challenge this month  and my event will give me 4 plus a virtual will give me 5 tomorrow.
I will post another note on Friday before the end of the day happy caching.

New Brunswick or Bust

Hello Fellow cachers,

What a great summer we are having for hitting the trails. have been doing a lot of hiking, mountain biking and off road motorcycle. It seems like not so much city caching anymore, could that be because I have done most of them?
Well, tomorrow Princess! and I are heading to New Brunswick to visit the parents and do a little caching as well. We are hosting an event on August 5th in Campbellton NB on the pier, a place I used to watch my grandfather work as a longshoreman and played there as well. Looking forward to meeting the local cachers and a number of Quebec cachers as it is only a KM to the Quebec side.
My sister, Indynb, who I got into caching two years ago will be there as well. We hope to get a few days of caching in. I suppose I will head out every morning to cache about 0430 and head back about 0800 to wake up Princess! Most of the caches will have the same hint, "Winter Friendly" which means 6 feet or more up a tree, I may need a ladder for some of them. I will post every few days on my caching experience in the East.
Happy caching.. Paulboy

15,000 and counting

As I near my 15,000 cache find, I find my self in Campbell River visiting the Outlaws . I brought my Geohonda with me for caching. I needed 87 caches to reach my goal and have two days to find these caches. I headed out at 0530 hours with bike in tow and parked at Willis road at the start of the DBM, Duncan Bay Mainline logging road and headed out. It was so quite and peaceful and not a sole around.
About 0700 hours a beat up 4X4 came off a side road and asked me how to get to Courtenay. He had most of his windows smashed out and the body was a mess. He took my directions and off he went.
At the morning progressed, it got real hot and the dust was thick, even going to grab caches was dusty, the trees and bushes were covered in dust. By 1030 hours, I had managed to find 85 caches. I was running out of water so I headed back to the truck and watered up and finished up the other side of the DBM  and a few caches in town. It is now noon and very hot and I managed to grab 97 caches. So in the end, I reached my goal of finding my 15,000 cache find before heading to New Brunswick at the end of the month.
My OAP event is coming up on August 23rd in Ladysmith, hope to see everyone there. More to come soon and happy caching everyone.

Always Caching

I have not done a post for some time but it is time do write a short post for the start of summer. Since my return from the Vegas trip, I have joined up with the Sunday Caching Group (SCG), we meet most Sundays that we can and do some pretty wild hikes to mountain tops and we have been also looking for a lot of the old Team caches on the Island. I have also been out on the off road Hondas with Cougar Kid every few weeks for some great days of caching mostly on the off roads between Courtenay & Campbell River off the DBM line. I have also been out a with JuRuu doing some hiking on the trails and some urban caching as well. I put together a group to hike the Wesley Ridge a few weeks ago behind Cameron Lake. There were 13 caches on this hike which started up to 600 meters then across the ridge and then down at 900 meters. Going down was the hardest as some of the areas we had to come down via ropes. It took us about 8.5 hours to complete. Some of the trails were not really trails but rather follow the pink ribbon through the woods. The views were so spectacular. It with a great hike with a great crew. It was a good idea that we parked a car at either end of the lake!
Not too much in the works for the rest of the summer but a few hikes in the fall are falling into place, like Mount Arrowsmith.
Princess! & I are heading to New Brunswick in less that a month and I will be caching there as well a little in Quebec which is just across the bridge form where I grew up, Campbellton, NB. It is certainly a different type of caching there as most caches have to be winter friendly, if that is possible. Princess! and I are having an event when we are in NB as there are not many events or cachers in the area. Looking forward to our trip there as it will be nice to see my parents and family.
My numbers are climbing and I am 112 caches away from 15,000.

I will be posting while in NB so anyone who is are interested can read about my caching there.

All Home

Hello my friends, well this has been an interesting trip to say the least.
We returned our cars to the rental shop, caught the shuttle to the airport about 0800 hours for our 11:11 flight on ALLEGIANT AIR, and it was just after 1700 hours before we got on the plane. We were told by a customer service agent that this is very common and that it is to do with pilots having to rest between trips and they are short staffed. We did save a few dollars with this trip but never again will I fly this airline.

It was a long, hard and rewarding trip. The days were long, sometimes up by 3am, off to breakfast and then drive for as long as 4.5 hours or an hour or so to get to GZ for the day. After  6 or 7 hours we would stop for a quick lunch on the side of the trail/road then carry on. Three of the nights we had events, so getting back to the hotels were sometimes later than we wanted. Hiking in the desert is certainly different that hiking in the hills on Vancouver Island.
Met a lot of interesting cachers along the route from all over the place, cachers travel far and wide to end up in Vegas to do the ET HWY. We stayed one night in Racheal so that those that were not with us last year could experience the ET  hype down there.
Our events were well attended and the spots I had picked turned out to be great with some awsome food and great service. A couple from Ontario that attended last years CIA event, were back this year. We brought a few prizes along and it seemed like this is not the norm in this part of the states.

In total we managed to find 3242 caches in 8 days and our biggest day was 1044 caches.
Would I do this again, I certainly would but a few changes would certainly be in order. These type of trips take a lot of planning and lack of sleep is the norm.
It is a good time of year to go to this area, hot and sunny but still a little chilly in the mornings and no snakes or small critters or none that we saw. We did encounter a bit of flash flooding, it can be kind of scary and dangerous at the same time.
I think the most interesting place had to be Belmont near the end of the ET HWY. This is a Ghost town with a very old cemetery from the early 1800. There are about 10 people that live here and the bar is out of this world. We were so lucky as it was open and we got to meet the owners.
I took a week off  to get some much needed sleep and spend time with Princess! I got out last weekend with the Sunday Caching Group and did two new caches in Nanaimo this week and looking forward to getting out this weekend on the off road motorcycles with Cougar Kid on the logging roads if the rains hold off. Then on Sunday, out with the Sunday Caching Group in Port Alberni.  On the trails again.

My next big adventure is a trip this August to New Brunswick to celebrate my OAP year with my parents and do some caching in my home town area. My sister, Indynb, has placed over 80 caches in the area.

I will be holding an event in late August in Ladysmith called "Paulboy's OAP Event". It will be my 65th birthday and hopefully it will attract a lot of cachers, a mega would be nice, LOL. Look for the listing sometime in late May.

I would like to thank the team, 8-IC, JuRuu, crkayaker, Cougar Kid, Sheesh695, Losthiker123 & Bornwild62, for being part of the team. Classictwo had to bow out at the last moment and her husband was serious ill and she was missed big time by all of us. I am happy to say, Doug is now home and doing great. and will be on the trails soon.

Hope to see you all on the trails, happy caching and be careful. Cachers are some of the greatest people in the world!

Friday, Saturday & Sunday

Hello everyone, we started off our day about 0400 hours and when I opened the hotel door, it was pissing rain, what a surprise!! then after breakfast we started the desert roads doing the trains, planes and automobiles series and it was starting to settle down. There were rain clouds in the distance and a little wind. We were informed that it was the first rain since early November. As we progressed towards 1100 hours the winds were up to 50 + hours and it was raining like a monsoon and a little hail for pleasure. We tried to hide under a tree for protection, like that is going to happen in the dessert..Did we ever get wet..
The roads were flooded in many area and a few area were flash flooded. As it got worst we finished our series and headed back to the hotel to clean up for our event. The restaurant that we choose a few months e for the event was a just the best ever, great food. The event was a hit and a good number of cachers showed up for such a small town. It ended up being a bit of a late night chatting and talking about geocaching..
I think we are at about 2800 caches, a little less than expected but some of the desert roads needed a 4 x 4 to access.
Saturday morning was our last day and after a 0730 start we headed towards Vegas doing a few mini power trails and a few small towns along the way. We decided to head to a car wash and clean up the vans before heading to our hotel in Vegas. That took about  75 minutes and then to the hotel to drop off our suit cases.
Then we decided to grab a few caches in Vegas mostly along the strip. We picked up 12 caches, 6 being virtual and 6 regular caches. It took longer than we thought and it was 1930 hours before we  got to have supper. I wonder sometimes about us cachers.
It was a very long 8 days on the road with most days lasting over 13+ hours.

Sunday morning we left the hotel at 0730 hours to return the cars and head to the airport for our 1111 hour flight. Who would have guessed, it is delayed to 1600 hours?? They say it is weather related but a staff made a mistake and it turns out it is because of staff problems..and now it also a little weather problem on top of that. It is almost 1500 hours and no sign of our plane yet..May not get home tonight. This is not good!!
So tired from the long week of caching and it would be nice to get home soon.
For all that have been following our trip and your comments, I thank you and see you on the trails.
Now the fun starts and we have to log in all the caches we found..

Thursday

Had a later start today and after breaky, it was a 90 minute drive to start the planes, trains & automobiles
power trail. So it was 1025 start and we finished by 5pm. It was a little cloudy today but still very warm and a large sand storm in the morning but it settled down by the time we started caching. All the roads were all derivable and we encountered no problems. The caches were mostly pill bottles with a few rocket launcher & ammo cans. We had a lot of laughs today and so much fun. I think we got about 500 plus caches today.
We are drinking a lot of water as a lot of the caches are 200 to 300 meters off the road.
We went to a great restaurant tonight and almost pissed ourselves laughing. I think I have told every American I have met, including three Police Officers that we have won the gold in both men and women hockey..  Today had special meaning to it as I found my  PASSPORT in the van, in a placed we looked many times, at least i can get home to my beautiful wife!!
JuRuu and I went for a short walk after supper to get some fresh air and grab one local cache in the dark up a very steep hill. It was tribute to a cachers daughter who died at nine years old. it was the last cache they placed together. A nice short walk but a sad story.
Well, time to head to bed as we are starting at 0500 hours to hike the peace sign & RV Geo Art. We want a very early start to avoid the hot sun.. Happy caching and more tomorrow.  Paulboy

Wednesday 26 February 2014

Tuesday & Wednesday

Tuesday: Well it was a 5 am start today doing some off road in the desert this Tuesday. We did about 300 caches but mega driving and even more hiking in the desert. It was a long and tiring day for all. It was about 30 C most of the day.A few tans if you can call it that. Met up with two cachers from Quebec. Lost my passport so this should be fun getting home. We had our second event last night and it was a blast. About 25 cachers showed up. A father and son caching team are going to join us for the day tomorrow. It was off to bed early so we can get an early start.

Wednesday: We got up at 0330 hours and headed over to Denny's for a 4 am breaky . We got sandwiches made up and off we went to do the HMD series which has 1000 caches plus a few others along the way. We managed to get over 1050 caches. We said our good byes our American friends and  we arrived in 29 Palms about 1900 hours. After checking in, supper was needed and off we went.
It was a very long day with a lot if miles. It was about 24 c and a few clouds but still hot. The roads were all paved but the pull outs were so soft, like quick sand. The van is getting very dirty from all the sand and dust.
I think it is much different from last year but still having fun. I think we are getting close to 2600 caches so far.
Tomorrow we are off to Barstow for two days and our final event. More to follow tomorrow night.

Searchlight, NV

I had no internet last night so this is a two day update. On Sunday we were in Rachel doing some small power trails on the way back to Vegas. We managed to get about 250 caches. It was a long day but a fun day and a long drive back to Vegas. We all went out for dinner at our hotel and a few more laughs. Then it was off to bed for a five am start.
Today we headed for Searchlight, NV, about an hour out of Vegas and started the Eldorado series and the Grampa series. This was a great series with a lot of soft sand driving. We spoke to a police officer about the back roads early this morning about the off road conditions and I informed him that we won the gold in hockey. A few laughs on this one. About 3 in the after noon, we were about 8 KM's on a off road and we saw a young man and his dog hiking. We stopped to ask him about this road we were on and he had a police cap on. Once I told him we were Canadian and geocaching, he said, you met my partner this morning and I know you won the gold in Hockey..So funny. One of the group, a female, thought that the young police officer was worth getting a speeding ticket for.We managed to find about 600+ caches today. What a great day. When we arrived back to the hotel we went out to supper at the local small casino and a laugh session followed for a few hours.  We were told by the locals in the casino that we were the most fun they have had in a long time.We are all going to sleep good tonight again.
This type of caching is not for everyone, but we are loving it. Thanks for following us and please leave a comment..Happy caching and more tomorrow. Paulboy and the 8-IC

Saturday 22 February 2014

Day One

Well we were up at 0315, got everyone in the Vans and off we went to Tonapath which is about a 4 hour drive north of Vegas. We stopped in Alomo for breakfast  and a short break. Once we arrived at the first cache, away we went and managed to get about 420 caches in 4 hours. The roads were a little rough in some spots but all was well. As there is no gas any where near here, we had to drive about 200 Km to get gas and return to Racheal for the night. We saw so many antelope, wild horses and a few critters as well as a lot of birds of prey. The scenery was out of this world and we went to a town of 9 people and Dirty Dicks Bar in Belmont. What a place in history this was. Even had hitching posts. They also had this grave yard that was out of this world, LOL, some of the grave stones were back in the early 1800. Lots of laughs and even a little gas. Everyone is on their lap tops getting things in order and doing our GPS loaded for tomorrow morning. We had a great supper here and another place in history that we stayed at last year.
More to follow tomorrow.Ggeocaching My way of Life  Paulboy

Arrival

We left Bellingham on the 0800 flight for Vegas and it was a great flight. We arrived about 1015 and got one of the cars, checked into our hotel and picked our other two cachers that arrived the day before. Off we went caching for a while around the ULV and then had to pick up the 2nd car. Time goes by so fast. About 1900 hours we all arrived for the event and we had about 30 cachers from all over the place. Had some great chats and stories. Not a whole lot today as we began our adventure at 0400 hours tomorrow on our way to start the 2001 to 2400 ET HWY  caches. We will end up in Rachael  tomorrow night and will let you all know how are day went. Geocaching My Way of Life  paulboy

Here we go

As we were about to start our adventure, a sad phone call from Classictwo and her husband is not doing to well and was admitted to the hospital so she had to cancel. We would like to dedicate this trip to Doug and a speedy recovery. All the best my friend.
We started by meeting in two different groups, Sheesh695 & myself went to the ferry to await for Cougar Kid, JuRuu & crkayker. I was driving Sheesh695's car so as we waited for the other three I left the lights on and once the other three arrived, the battery was dead. So we got a boost and on to the ferry. We arrived at the hotel before 1900 hours. Cougar Kid and JuRuu went for something to eat and the rest of us went caching in the dark. We just had to and we managed to find 10 caches before heading back to the hotel. A great start and we have not even arrived in Vegas. Bornwild62 & Losthiker are already in Vegas and we will meet up with them today about 1230 hours. My GPS fell under the seat on the way back to the hotel so that was fun trying to find!! Just adds to the fun.
We catch our flight at 0800 hours this morning but I cannot sleep, not sure if it is snoring or excitement!!
I will do another post after our event in Vegas tonight. Geocaching My Way of Life..Paulboy

Thursday 20 February 2014

It is Thursday Feb. 20th and Bornwild62 and Losthiker are now on a plane to Vegas to await the other 6 cachers to arive tomorrow morning. The 6 of us are catching the 315 ferry to the mainland today and a quick drive to Bellingham. Wa for our overnight stay and catch our flight tomorrow morning to Vegas.
We may even get a few caches tonight in Bellingham?? More to follow tonight..Paulboy

Sunday 16 February 2014

8-IC

The new caching adventure is about to start in four days. This morning we had our last meeting and breakfast at my place and then it was off to our 8-IC send off event in Ladysmith. Over 40 cachers showed up to join us for something to eat and a few prizes. It was a great time with a lot of laughs. Thanks to everyone for coming to our send off. On Thursday we are heading to Bellingham and then off to Vegas on Friday morning.
Will keep you updated daily.

Saturday 8 February 2014

It is time to get back to this blog. Last year was a great year for caching and have met some wonderful cachers and so many no cachers on Vancouver Island this past year. I managed to get over 5700 caches last year bring my cache finds to over 11,000. This year I have been asked to join a Sunday Caching Group that is on a mission to find most if not all the old Team KFWB caches. A lot of them are archived but still in place and many have been adopted.
I have put a new team together this year for another trip to Vegas and beyond which we start on Feb 21st. The team consists of myself, Paulboy, Cougar Kid, JuRuu, Sheesh695, Classictwo, crkayaker, Bornwild and Losthiker123. Some of the crew from last year could not make it this trip.
We intend to start off doing the new addition to the ET HWY as another 400 caches have been added and many other power trails in California, Arizona and Nevada.
Six of us are flying out of the USA and two of the team are going down a few days early to do some sight seeing in Vegas. I will be doing a daily blog for those that wish to follow our adventure and comment if you so desire.
This Sunday, Feb. 16th, we are having our send off event in Ladysmith at Ricky's restaurant  at 1300 hours and you can sign in at GC4TPGO.
Stay tuned for more blogs as we move forward.
